Module Outline

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or 'things' with embedded electronics, software, sensors and/or connectivity. These 'things' achieve greater value and better service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. In this module, we introduce you to IoT concepts, building blocks, applications and ecosystems. We support you with a series of exercises, covering basic principles to more advanced IoT system design. You also get hands-on experience in building an IoT system by integrating sensor devices and cloud to remotely monitor and control sensor data from any Internet devices, such as PC or smart phone.

You cover topics including:
• introduction to IoT
• IoT architecture and components
• IoT connectivity protocols
• cloud platform and management for IoT
• emerging software-defined networks and virtualisation for IoT
• IoT vertical applications (vehicle, industry, ehealth)

Module learning outcomes

Systematic understanding of IoT concepts, elements, applications and ecosystems, and in-depth analysis of its architecture and standards as well as connectivity protocols.

Design and critically evaluate the performance of hardware and software modules to control: connectivity between embedded IoT nodes, including access protocols for gateway, cloud and end-user client access.

Capacity building on social impact by exploring the business and sustainability opportunities of embedded IoT applications and systematically identify effective designs

Teamwork practice to reflect both individual and collaborative contributions into a complex IoT use case by exercising both engineering and business skills.
