Module Outline
This module covers all the major concepts that are required to gain a good understanding of modern electrical drive systems, as well as their operation. The module also involves practical work using simulation software, as well as hands-on laboratory work. Topics normally include the following:
鈥 Introduction to electrical drive systems, electrical principles
鈥 Drive mechanics, mechanical principles, electrical drive dynamics
鈥 Magnetism & machine fundamentals, magnetic circuits, transformers, electromechanical energy conversion
鈥 Fundamentals of power electronics, converters for drives
鈥 Control of electrical drives, feedback control
鈥 Fundamentals of DC machines, brushless DC motors
鈥 AC machines and space vectors, induction motors, induction motor drives
鈥 Synchronous machines, synchronous motor drives
鈥 Servo, stepper & reluctance drives

Module learning outcomes
