Developing Children's Communication, Language and Literacy (X6604)

Spring teaching
On this module, you'll develop your understanding of how to foster children's communication, language, and literacy, building on foundational theories and practical approaches, along with hands-on classroom experiences.
After focusing strongly on reading, the attention now shifts to writing. You'll explore how skilled practitioners can support language and literacy development through:
- the importance of play
- creating an enabling environment
- rich storytelling and roleplay opportunities.
Through the lens of inclusion, you'll examine how to sequence the teaching of writing and nurture lifelong writers. You'll reflect on classroom experiences and consider the application of established pedagogies and emerging innovations, while also critiquing and contextualising policy and practice.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
